We are called Great Exchange Church because we wanted a name strange enough to provoke you to ask, “Why is your church named that?!”
A “Great Exchange” is one way Christians have talked about what was happening when Jesus died on a Roman cross 2,000 years ago. Jesus taught his followers before dying that “I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:15). His death would be good for his people. One of his early followers would say that while Jesus knew no sin himself, God made Jesus “to be sin for us, so that in him, we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The cross of Jesus is a “Great Exchange” because our sin is put on Jesus and in exchange we are clothed in his perfect righteousness!
Our as one ancient writer put it, “O the sweet exchange that the sinfulness of many should be hidden in one righteous person, while the righteousness of one should justify many sinners!” Epistle to Diognetus.
For several years, Newark-natives, campus ministers, college students, and local churches had been dreaming about a new church planted at the intersection of the campus and the community. We had been asking God what he was up to in stirring interest in the hearts of several families.
In November of 2024, Heritage Presbytery called Tyler Brown and his family to transition from campus ministry to UD into full time church planting. On March 16, 2025, approximately 45 people showed up to Castle Sports Complex for a night of prayer that Jesus would build his church.
By God’s grace, we hope to launch public worship services soon. If you’re interested in joining our launch team, fill out our contact form today!
